SHOW NOTES

Welcome to a new week of the Hope Rescue Podcast. We are in a series on mental health, anxiety, and worry right now so if you haven’t seen the previous episodes in this series make sure to go back to the start in episode seventy. This week we are talking about how to overcome fear in your life. Keep reading or listening to find out!

Tim explains that there are three steps to overcoming fear: identify the fear, take fear to its logical conclusion, and replace the lies with truth. In this episode, we will break down and explain these three steps in detail.

  1. Identify the fear. Kimberly explains that fear often resides in the unknown. If we analyze our fears through the lens of reality, they often diminish or even disappear. For example, Tim shares that as a child, he was afraid of the dark. His father asked him, “Are you afraid of the dark or are you afraid of what’s in the dark?” This question helped bring Tim’s fear back to reality and actually analyze what he was truly afraid of. This same concept can be applied to the fears we experience in our daily lives. What are you actually afraid of? Fear can be crippling and prevent us from living our lives. When we take a step back and analyze what we are truly afraid of, it allows us to move forward with confidence. Tim and Kimberly recommend that the listeners pause the audio and write down their top five fears. When you have that list, write down the top five characteristics that define you as a person. We will deal with these lists later in the podcast.

  2. Take fear to its logical conclusion. What is the worst case scenario of your biggest fears? If your top five fears actually came to life, what would transpire? Can you create a solution to the problem? Chances are, even the worst case scenario would still be manageable. When we identify our fears and take them to their logical conclusion, they are often not even worth stressing about. When looking at your two lists side by side, ask yourself, “Would the threat of your worst case scenario affect your identity?” Psalm 62:1-6 says, “For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. How long will all of you attack a man to batter him, like a leaning wall, a tottering fence? They only plan to thrust him down from his high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. Selah For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.” When your soul is tethered to the very presence and power of God, fear will have no hold on your life.

  3. Replace lies with truth. Kimberly says, “Satan is the author of lies, and fear is his greatest weapon. Are you going to believe the lies or choose to hang on to the rope of hope that comes from truth alone?” Satan has one primary tool in his arsenal: deception. He feeds our fear with deception. The way to dismantle fear is to dislodge the lies with truth. We have talked about this concept in previous episodes as well but it’s the most crucial concept you can take from this entire series. When scripture is resident in your mind you can quickly expose the lies from satan.

Below are some lies from Satan that you may be believing:

You have gone too far for God.

You will never find peace or happiness.

You are not good enough.

You are a lost cause.

The Lord doesn't care about you.

You are alone.

You have no value.

Below are true statements that can be found in scripture:

God always wants to hear from you.

God's plans involve hope and joy, not fear.

God loves you.

With Christ's sacrifice, you always have a path back to God.

You have been adopted into the family of God.

You cannot be separated from the love of God.

Believe these truths about your life. Memorize and meditate on scripture, and quickly dismantle Satan’s lies as soon as they appear in your mind. We will wrap up our series on mental health next week. We love you guys!
