SHOW NOTES
Welcome to our second episode in our new series “Dumb Things Christians Say.” We could talk about this topic for a very long time because, let’s be honest, Christians are infamous for repeating cheesy clichés. In this series, we want to dig into some of these clichés that are actually not biblical and discuss alternative phrases that are scripturally accurate. Today we are talking about the cliché “God will never give you more than you can handle.”
Saying “God will never give you more than you can handle” actually implies that God will only challenge you with things you can handle without Him. The beauty of God giving us more than we can handle is that we must fully rely on Him for success. Difficult times force us to pursue God. We know there are times when God allows difficult situations to come our way because Jesus himself went through more difficulty than we could ever imagine. Or think of the difficulty that David went through before he became king. God can orchestrate or simply allow difficult situations to arise because they strengthen us and bring us closer to Him. Kimberly says, “When we are most comfortable, we are least likely to grow.”
If we believe that God will never give us more than we can handle, it skews our view of God when we actually do experience a difficult situation that is more than we can handle. Instead of turning to God in desperation, we will become angry with Him or angry with ourselves.
God definitely gives us more than we can handle. There are countless examples of this in scripture, such as Job and the Apostle Paul. Tim quotes 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 which says, “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Tim says, “God always gives us the ability to overcome hardships when we turn to Him.”
Tune into the episode to hear some ways that this topic has personally affected Tim and Kimberly as they received unexpected diagnoses within the past few years. Thank you for joining us, and make sure you tune in next Monday as we continue this topic! We love you guys!
