SHOW NOTES
In this episode, we continue our series on finding freedom from addiction, diving deeper into the transformative power of surrendering to Christ. Addiction doesn’t have to define you, and through Christ, there is hope, healing, and lasting change.
The foundation of this series is rooted in the profound truth of 1 Corinthians 6:12:"All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything." This verse challenges us to examine how our freedoms can easily become chains if we allow anything other than Christ to have dominion over us. True freedom is found when we recognize what is truly helpful and aligned with God’s will, not just what we are technically allowed to do.
Many people believe in the "law of inevitability"—the idea that change is impossible or that our identity is permanently tied to our struggles. Phrases like “once an addict, always an addict” deny the transformative power of Christ. The truth is, in Christ, we are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Jesus doesn’t just forgive; He renews. Your genetics, upbringing, or past struggles don’t define you. God’s grace rewrites your story.
Even if we have a predisposition toward a particular sin or addiction, God is greater. He works to transform us from the inside out, empowering us to overcome.
Willpower vs. Surrender
Trying to overcome sin or addiction through sheer willpower often leads to frustration and defeat. Willpower is finite and can fail under pressure. Surrendering to Christ, however, allows His strength to work through us.
Imagine trying to calm anger or resist temptation through sheer determination. You might succeed temporarily, but true, lasting change comes only when you acknowledge your inability to do it on your own.
Surrendering means admitting you can’t fight the battle alone and fully entrusting your struggles to the Lord. It’s about relying on His strength, not your own.
Steps Toward Surrender
Acknowledge the Sin: Be honest with yourself and God about the areas where you are struggling.
Repentance: Turn away from the sin and surrender it to the Lord, asking Him to take control.
Rely on God’s Divine Power: Recognize that true change comes not from your efforts but from God’s strength working in you.
When we relinquish control to Christ and place Him as Lord over every area of our lives, we experience His power to transform us. Surrender isn’t a one-time act; it’s a daily, repetitive commitment to trust in God’s sovereignty.
Psalm 19:12-14"Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer." This passage is a powerful reminder of our dependence on God to keep us from sin. It’s a prayer of surrender, asking God to guard us against hidden and willful sins and to shape our hearts and minds to reflect His holiness.
True victory comes not through striving but through surrender. Trying to purge sin through self-effort alone will only leave us exhausted and defeated. But when we fully surrender to God, His grace empowers us to live victoriously.
The road to freedom begins with acknowledging our need for God and surrendering to His power. Transformation is possible because of Christ’s redemptive work on the cross. Through Him, we can break free from the chains that bind us and live in the freedom He offers.
