SHOW NOTES

Welcome back to our series on living a balanced life. Last week, Tim and Kimberly shared the second area in our lives to find balance: our emotions. This week they are continuing the conversation by discussing how to balance our spirit.

Imagine that your life is like a wheel with eight spokes. A wheel will keep moving if one of your spokes is broken, but if multiple spokes are not balanced, your wheel will collapse. In a balanced life, each spoke supports one another. They work together to create a balanced life. In this series, Tim and Kimberly are covering the eight categories they recommend balancing in our lives: our minds, our emotions, our spirits, our bodies, our social lives, our finances, our unique purposes, and our homes.

We are trichotomous beings. The word trichotomous is used to describe the belief that human beings consist of three parts – spirit, soul and body. The apostle Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 5:23, “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Our bodies are the containers of our soul. Our souls are the containers of our spirits. Ephesians 2:1-9 says, "And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

When you believe in Jesus Christ, you become spiritually alive. Before we give our lives to Christ, we are spiritually dead or “dead in the trespasses and sins in which we walked.” Now that we have received the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ, we need to learn how to balance our spirits. Tim and Kimberly finish the podcast by describing 5 ways to balance your spirit.

5 Ways to Balance Your Spirit

  1. Study the Word of God. It’s important not only to read God’s Word but also to study it and understand it. Take the time to study scripture and prioritize digging into the Word every day.

  2. Meditate on memorized scripture. Tim commonly emphasizes the importance of memorizing scripture. He has shared that when he can’t sleep at night, he goes over memorized scripture in his head until he calms down and falls back asleep. If we take the time to memorize scripture, we have it ready to go in our minds to meditate on and truly understand what a passage is saying. Joshua 1:8 says, "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

  3. Pray. First Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." Praise God and be thankful to Him for all that He has done.

  4. Connect with other believers. Join a church, and if you’re already in a church, join a small group. If your church doesn’t have small groups, start one! Intentionally spend time with other believers.

  5. Surrender to the Holy Spirit. Rely on the Holy Spirit to lead you in every walk of life.

Join us next week as we continue the conversation on finding balance in your life. We love you guys!
