SHOW NOTES
Welcome to a new week of the Hope Rescue Podcast. This week Tim is alone on the podcast as Kimberly is out of town welcoming their newest grandbaby. In episode 155, Tim discusses his top tips for coping with stress.
When we think about stress, we often view it as negative, but in certain cases stress can be useful and helpful.
In the realm of psychology, there are two types of stress: good stress and bad stress. Eustress is a word used to describe stress that is positive, motivating, and enhances functioning while distress refers to bad and overwhelming stress that hinders functioning.
Eustress is a manageable and controllable type of stress. It helps us perform at optimum level. The anticipation of a first date, the first day at a new job, or other having a baby all fall under the umbrella of eustress.
Distress causes us to go over the top by loss of control. When we can't manage our stress and we stop functioning, it's common to turn from the stress and become stunned into unproductivity.
Some of the most common stressors in life are finances, relationships, work, school, and health.
One of Tim’s top tips for coping with stress is to focus on being in the moment. Don’t worry about tomorrow or what the future will bring. Be present today wherever you are in your journey. Matthew 6:34 says, "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” By staying in the moment and not worrying about the future, your focus will shift from stress to contentment.
Matthew 11:28-29 says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Psalm 55:22 says, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.”
Every time you feel stressed, give it to the Lord. Ask the Lord to take it from you. God is in the business of providing rest for you. Come to Him, trust Him, and He will give you rest.
